Grading Get the Ground Right and Most Water Problems Go Away
Grading is the shape of your yard: which way the ground falls, how evenly, and whether water leaves on its own. It is the cheapest drainage fix there is when it is an option, because a correctly shaped yard has nothing to clog, nothing to maintain and nothing to replace.
It is also the prep nobody sees. Sod laid on a lumpy grade scalps every time it is mowed, and a patio built on ground that falls toward the house moves the problem rather than solving it.
When a Yard Needs Regrading
If the yard is bumpy, or it slopes toward the house, we prefer grading. Reshaping the ground so it falls away from the structure is the durable fix, and it usually also gives you a lawn you can actually mow evenly.
When It Has To Be Drainage Instead
Some houses sit low. There is no slope available to give them, and no amount of dirt work changes that. Those yards need a drainage system.
The other case is a yard that already has landscaping worth keeping. Adding drainage instead of regrading can save redoing the landscaping, and on an established property that saving is usually larger than the difference in the work itself.
What Grading Work Involves
- Consultation. We walk the property and work out where water is going now.
- A plan for the fall of the ground — away from the house, toward somewhere the water can actually go.
- Cut, fill and shape, with soil brought in or taken away as the job needs.
- Drainage where grading alone will not finish the job, run by the same crew.
- Sod or planting back over the top.
Cost varies with the problem that needs solving and what solutions are possible, so grading is quoted after we see the yard. Grading goes in before sod, planting and any patio.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my yard need regrading or a drainage system?
If the yard is bumpy or slopes toward the house, we prefer grading, because reshaping the ground is the fix with nothing to maintain. If the house sits low and cannot be given slope away from it, a drainage system is needed instead.
Can regrading be avoided on an established yard?
Often, yes. Adding drainage rather than regrading can save redoing the landscaping, and on a yard with mature planting that saving is usually worth more than the difference in the work.
How much does landscape grading cost?
It varies with the problem being solved and what solutions are possible on the site. We quote after walking the property.
Do you grade before laying sod?
Yes. Grading comes before sod and planting. A lawn laid on a lumpy grade scalps on every high spot when it is mowed.
Request Grading Consultation
If the yard is bumpy, holds water, or slopes toward the house, grading is usually where the fix starts. Doug and Zach Cramer look at it in person before quoting — a wet yard cannot be diagnosed from photographs.
Call or text Doug at (843) 614-9773, or request a consultation.
The consultation at your home is free around Charleston, Mount Pleasant and Summerville. For Kiawah, Seabrook, Wadmalaw and Awendaw, or anywhere else more than an hour from Charleston or Summerville, there’s a charge for the proposal trip. It comes off the price if you go ahead with the build, and it is not refundable if you do not.
