Done correctly, a retaining wall is one of the most durable landscape investments a homeowner can make. Done incorrectly — without proper drainage behind the wall, with inadequate footing depth, or with the wrong materials for the height and load — a retaining wall will fail. Soil pressure, hydrostatic pressure from retained water, and freeze-thaw cycles all act against a wall that wasn’t designed for them.

When Do You Need a Retaining Wall?

Not every slope needs a retaining wall. But there are situations where a wall is the right solution and others where it is the only solution.

Erosion on a sloped lot. If rain events are washing soil down a slope — into the lawn, down a driveway, or toward a structure — a retaining wall at the base of the slope, or a series of smaller terraced walls stepping up the grade, stops the movement and holds soil in place.

Creating usable yard space. A steeply sloped backyard is difficult or impossible to use for seating areas, play areas, gardens, or lawn. Cutting into the slope and installing a retaining wall at the cut edge creates a flat terrace that can be landscaped, paved, or used for outdoor living. This is one of the most common retaining wall applications in the Charleston area.

Drainage management. Water moving across sloped ground can be redirected and managed with retaining walls that channel drainage to specific areas and away from foundations, patios, and structures. A wall combined with a French drain or graded drainage swale becomes part of an integrated water management system.

Foundation protection. On properties where slope approaches a structure’s foundation, a retaining wall intercepts the soil and water load before it reaches the foundation. This is a common situation on older Charleston properties where the landscape has changed over time.

Landscape design. Retaining walls create tiered planting beds, raised gardens, and grade transitions that add depth and dimension to flat or gently sloped properties. A low retaining wall — even one not structurally necessary — can define garden beds, add visual structure, and create planting opportunities that don’t exist in a flat landscape.

Retaining Wall Materials

Concrete Block (Segmental Retaining Wall Block)

Concrete segmental retaining wall block is the most widely used material for retaining wall construction in Charleston. Manufactured blocks — brands like Allan Block, Versa-Lok, Belgard, and similar — are engineered specifically for retaining wall applications with interlocking geometry that provides structural strength without mortar. They are designed to set back slightly with each course, creating a natural batter (backward lean) that resists soil pressure.

Concrete block walls are durable, cost-effective, relatively fast to install, and available in a range of textures and colors that can match or complement adjacent hardscape. They are appropriate for walls from a few inches to several feet in height — walls above 4 feet require engineering review in most jurisdictions.

Natural Stone

Natural stone retaining walls — built with fieldstone, limestone, granite, or other locally available stone — are the most visually distinctive retaining wall option. A well-built dry-stacked or mortared stone wall has a permanence and character that no manufactured product fully replicates.

In Charleston, flagstone and local fieldstone are common choices. Natural stone walls require more skilled labor than block walls and take longer to build, which increases the cost. They are also somewhat less predictable structurally than engineered block systems, which is why they are most commonly used for lower garden walls and decorative grade transitions rather than for tall structural walls holding significant soil loads.

Poured Concrete

Poured concrete retaining walls are the structural choice for situations demanding maximum strength — large grade differentials, heavy soil loads, walls integrated with drainage structures, or applications where engineered performance is required. Poured concrete walls are typically formed and reinforced with rebar, poured on-site, and finished to match the project aesthetic.

Poured concrete walls cost more than block and require more construction time due to forming and cure time, but they are the most durable option for demanding structural applications.

Brick

Mortared brick retaining walls suit traditional Charleston architecture particularly well. A brick wall that matches or complements the home’s exterior brings a cohesive, crafted aesthetic to the landscape. Brick walls are typically built on a concrete footing and require periodic tuckpointing over time to maintain integrity. They are appropriate for low-to-moderate height walls and are more commonly used for decorative garden walls than for walls holding large soil loads.

Timber and Railroad Ties

Landscape timber and railroad tie walls were widely used in the 1980s and 1990s and are still occasionally specified for rustic or naturalistic settings. They are the least expensive retaining wall option initially, but they have the shortest lifespan — timber in contact with moist South Carolina soil is subject to rot and insect damage even with treatment. We generally recommend alternative materials when a client is considering timber, given the maintenance and replacement cycle.

Retaining Wall Drainage: The Most Important Factor

The most common reason retaining walls fail is inadequate drainage behind the wall. When water accumulates in the soil retained by the wall, hydrostatic pressure builds against the back face of the structure. Over time, that pressure exceeds what the wall was designed to hold, and the wall moves, cracks, or topples.

Every retaining wall we build includes proper drainage infrastructure behind it:

Gravel backfill. The area immediately behind the wall is backfilled with clean crushed gravel or drainage aggregate rather than native soil. Gravel does not retain water — it allows water to drain freely down through the backfill zone.

Drainage pipe. A perforated drain pipe at the base of the gravel backfill zone collects the water and channels it away from the wall — either to a collection point, a drainage swale, or a French drain system that carries it off the property.

Weep holes. For mortared or solid-face walls, weep holes are installed at regular intervals along the base of the wall to allow any accumulated water to escape through the face of the wall rather than building pressure behind it.

Properly drained retaining walls perform for decades. Poorly drained walls start showing stress within a few years. This is one area where there is no shortcut worth taking.

Retaining Wall Costs in Charleston

Retaining wall pricing is based on linear footage of wall, height, material, and site conditions (access, existing grade, drainage complexity). General ranges:

Concrete block retaining wall: $45 to $75 per linear foot for walls up to 3 feet tall. Add $15 to $25 per linear foot for each additional foot of height.

Natural stone retaining wall: $65 to $120 per linear foot, depending on stone type and wall height.

Can I build a retaining wall myself?

Low garden walls (under 2 feet) can be DIY projects with the right materials. Structural retaining walls that hold significant soil loads and require drainage infrastructure are not good DIY projects — the design, drainage, and footing requirements are where failures originate, and they are not visible once the wall is built.
